What is an EV Chargepoint Grant?

An EV chargepoint grants support the purchase and installation of EV chargepoints for eligible residential properties, car parks, and commercial/public buildings. The scheme is administrated by the DVLA on behalf of The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV).

Key information

This grant was created to help SMEs ease the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) for workplaces across the UK.

The EV Infrastructure Grant is a little more unique than the standard grant allowing you to claim money off the wider building and installation works that take place to install EV chargepoints, both now and in the future.  You can expect to receive up to 75% off the installation cost at a maximum of £30,000 depending on the number of parking spaces the work covers. The amount you can receive for the work being:

  • Up to £350 per socket installed (A dual charger counts as 2 sockets)
  • Up to £500 per parking space that has supported infrastructure installed
  • You can receive up to 5 grants across 5 different sites

After a successful application, you will receive a voucher code, valid for 180 days from the date of issue. With the installation being required to happen during this time.

You must use an OZEV-approved installer and also install OZEV-approved chargepoints.

Eligibility

Business Eligibility

To apply for the EV infrastructure grant, your business must:

  • Have 249 employees or fewer.
  • Be registered with Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC.

Property Requirements

Your property must:

  • Be located in the UK (excluding the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man).
  • Be used only by staff and company vehicles—public use is not allowed.
  • Have at least one chargepoint socket installed as part of the work.
  • Have at least five parking spaces that are either equipped with chargepoints or prepared for future installation.

Parking Requirements

Each parking space must:

  • Be off-street, private, and clearly defined (it does not need to be part of the property).
  • Be owned by you or legally controlled by your business.

OZEV Approval Requirements

You must:

  • Use an OZEV-approved installer.
  • Install an eligible commercial chargepoint from the OZEV-approved list.

Financial Assistance Limits

  • You can receive up to £315,000 in Minimal Financial Assistance (MFA) over three financial years.
  • MFA includes state grants, subsidies, and other government-funded financial incentives.
  • Any financial assistance you receive will be clearly marked as MFA.
  • Public authorities are not required to declare MFA during the application process.

Mandatory Chargepoint or Infrastructure Exemptions

You cannot apply for this grant if the chargepoint installation is a mandatory requirement under:

  • Building regulations (e.g. Part S Regulations for England, effective from 15 June 2022, or equivalent regulations in devolved nations).
  • Planning conditions requiring the installation of chargepoints or supporting infrastructure.

Fire Safety Measures

As the property owner or manager, you must:

  • Assess potential fire risks associated with EV charging installations.
  • Implement and maintain appropriate fire safety measures.
How to apply

Before You Apply

Before submitting an application, you must ensure that your site is ready for the installation. This includes:

  • Upgrading your building’s electrical supply if necessary to support the chargepoints.
  • Arranging regular maintenance checks to ensure the chargepoints remain in good working condition.
  • Deciding how the electricity and running costs will be paid and who will be responsible for them.
  • Ensuring the chargepoints are accessible to the intended users.
  • Updating your property’s risk assessment to account for the new chargepoints and any potential safety considerations.

Once these steps are completed, you can proceed with your application.

Step 1: Contact an OZEV-Approved Installer

To be eligible for the grant, you must use an OZEV-approved chargepoint installer. They will ensure that the installation meets all technical and regulatory standards. The installer will also be responsible for submitting the grant claim on your behalf once the work is completed.

Step 2: Choose an Eligible Chargepoint Model

Only chargepoint models that are approved by OZEV qualify for this grant. Before proceeding, check the list of eligible chargepoints to ensure compliance. Consider future needs when selecting a model, ensuring it supports potential expansion of your electric vehicle infrastructure.

Step 3: Create an Account on the OZEV Grant Portal

To apply, you must create an account on the OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grants portal. During registration, you will need:

  • An email address
  • A UK mobile phone number to receive a security code
  • A Companies House registration number or VAT registration number

If your business is a linked enterprise, you must apply using the company registration number of your controlling company.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Your application must include:

  • The address where the installation will take place.
  • The installer’s OZEV registration number.
  • The number of parking spaces covered (if applying for the EV infrastructure grant).

If applying for multiple sockets at the same address, this can be done within a single application. However, if you are using multiple installers or applying for installations at different addresses, you must submit separate applications.

Step 5: Claiming the Grant

Once the installation is complete, your installer will submit the grant claim on your behalf through the OZEV portal. The claim will include:

  • Photographs of the installation
  • A detailed invoice
  • Chargepoint details

You will receive an email from OZEV prompting you to log in and review the claim. If there are errors, you have one week to request corrections. If you do nothing, the claim will be submitted automatically.

Once approved, the grant will be paid directly to your installer, who will deduct it from your final bill. Your invoice will clearly show the total installation cost minus the grant amount.

Step 6: Audits and Compliance

OZEV may conduct audits to verify that installations meet grant requirements. If selected, auditors will contact you to arrange a site visit.

How much money will I get with an OZEV grant?

For UK domestic properties, the EV chargepoint grant provides funding of up to 75% towards the cost of installing electric vehicle chargepoints at domestic properties.

If you’re a flat owner or a tenant, you can claim for the chargepoint grant which provides £350 or up to 75% off the purchase and installation of a socket (whichever is the lower amount).

As a Landlord and property owner, you can apply for both the electric vehicle chargepoint grant and the electric vehicle infrastructure grant. 

 

The chargepoint grant

This Grant can provide £350 or up to 75% off the purchase and installation of a socket (whichever is the lower amount). With landlords being able to apply for up to 200 grants a year and commercial being able to apply for 100 per financial year.

The infrastructure grant

With the infastructure grant you can get up to £30,000 or 75% of the cost of installing multiple chargepoints and the related building work. The exact amount will depend on the number of parking spaces included in the work. With each grant having to be for a different property. The grant can include wiring and infrastructure to allow for future additional chargepoint installations. In each financial year, a maximum of 30 infrastructure grants may be submitted per business.

Is the OZEV grant ending?

The OZEV EV infrastructure and chargepoint grants have an official closing date of 31st March 2024 at 11.59pm. However, OZEV reserve the right to change the eligibility rules with 4 weeks’ notice. This won’t affect vouchers already issued. The next scheduled review of the OZEV Grant provision is set for March 2023. As the Government scales back its spending plans, the scheme could be at risk of cancellation. We recommend submitting your OZEV application and checking your eligibility now because a delay could mean your business misses out on this scheme.
