What is an EV Chargepoint Grant?

An EV chargepoint grants support the purchase and installation of EV chargepoints for eligible residential properties, car parks, and commercial/public buildings. The scheme is administrated by the DVLA on behalf of The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV).

Key information

This grant was created to help ease the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) for residential and commercial landlords across the UK.

This Grant is seperated into 2 parts the EV chargepoint Grant and the EV Infastructure Grant

What You Can Receive

EV Chargepoint Grant:

For the EV Chargepoint Grant you can expect to receive up to 75% off the installation cost at a maximum of £350 per socket (A Dual Charger counts as 2 sockets)

  • Residential Property Landlords can claim up to 200 grants a year
  • With Commercial Property Landlords receiving a further 100 grants

EV Infastrucutre Grant:

This grant is a residential-only option

The EV Infrastructure Grant is a little more unique than the standard grant allowing you to claim money off the wider building and installation works that take place to install EV chargepoints, both now and in the future.  You can expect to receive up to 75% off the installation cost at a maximum of £30,000 depending on the number of parking spaces the work covers. The amount you can receive for the work being:

  • Up to £350 per socket installed (A dual charger counts as 2 sockets)
  • Up to £500 per parking space that has supported infrastructure installed
  • 30 grants per financial year

After a successful application, you will receive a voucher that is valid for 180 days from the date of issue. With the installation being required to happen during this time.

You must use an OZEV-approved installer and also install OZEV-approved chargepoints.

 

Eligibility

EV Chargepoint Grant for Landlords

Site Requirements

  • The property must be in the UK (excluding the Channel Islands and Isle of Man).
  • The chargepoint must be for tenant use (not public use).
  • The parking space must be:
    • Off-street, private, and clearly defined.
    • Accessible to your tenant.
    • Owned by you or legally available to you (Land Registry documents may be required).

Installer Requirements

  • The installation must be carried out by an OZEV-approved installer.
  • The chargepoint must be from the OZEV-approved list.

Business Requirements (For commercial EV Chargepoint Claims)

  • You must be a business registered at Companies House or VAT-registered with HMRC.
  • Eligible applicants include:
    • Private or social housing landlords.
    • Right to Manage (RTM) companies.
    • Residents’ Management Companies (RMCs).
    • Companies or individuals owning freehold property for rent.
    • Companies managing common areas of a building.
    • Property Factors in Scotland.
    • Private registered providers of social housing (PRPs).
    • Public sector organisations (e.g., councils, NHS, emergency services).
    • Charities managing or owning residential property.

Previous Assistance

  • You cannot apply if the chargepoint is being installed due to a mandatory planning or building regulation requirement.

Additional Requirements

  • You cannot apply if:
    • You live in the property.
    • The property is only rented as a holiday home.
    • You do not have a company registration number or VAT registration number.

EV Infrastructure Grant for Landlords

Site Requirements

  • The property must be in the UK (excluding the Channel Islands and Isle of Man).
  • The grant is for residential properties only (commercial landlords are not eligible).
  • The infrastructure must support multiple homes (e.g., apartment blocks or estates with shared parking).
  • At least one chargepoint socket must be installed as part of the work.
  • The work must cover at least five parking spaces, ensuring they are either fitted with chargepoints or prepared for future installation.

Installer Requirements

  • The work must be carried out by an OZEV-approved installer.
  • Chargepoints installed must be from the OZEV-approved list.

Business Requirements

  • You must be a business registered at Companies House or VAT-registered with HMRC.
  • Eligible applicants include:
    • Private or social housing landlords.

How to apply

Before You Apply

Before applying for an EV chargepoint or infrastructure grant, you must:

  • Upgrade your electrical supply – Any necessary improvements to your building’s electrical system are completed.
  • Plan for maintenance – Arrange regular checks with a certified electritian to keep the chargepoints in good working order.
  • Decide on cost management – Determine how electricity usage and ongoing running costs will be covered.
  • Ensure accessibility – Confirm that the chargepoints will be accessible to tenants.
  • Update your risk assessment – Revise your property’s risk assessment to account for the new chargepoints.

How to Apply for the Grant

To apply, follow these steps:

  1. Create a landlord account on the OZEV grant portal.
  2. Find an OZEV-approved chargepoint installer.
  3. Gather the required information, including:
    • A valid email address.
    • A UK mobile phone number (for security verification).
    • A Companies House registration number or VAT registration number.
    • If applying as a linked enterprise, use the registration number of your controlling company.

When submitting an application, you must include:

  • One property address per application.
  • One installer’s details, including their OZEV installer number.
  • Number of parking spaces covered (for EV infrastructure grants only).
  • Chargepoint model from the OZEV-approved list.

Important Notes:

  • Separate applications are required for residential and commercial properties.
  • You can apply for multiple sockets at the same address.
  • If using more than one installer or applying for multiple addresses, submit a separate application for each.

Receiving the Grant Payment

Once the installation is complete:

  • Your installer will submit the claim through the OZEV portal.
  • They will provide details, installation photos, and an invoice to OZEV.
  • OZEV will notify you by email to review the claim in your online account.
  • If any details are incorrect, you will have one week to respond with corrections.
  • If you take no action, the claim will be automatically submitted as it is.

If OZEV approves the claim:

  • The grant amount will be paid directly to the installer.
  • Your final invoice will show the total installation cost minus the grant amount.

How much money will I get with an OZEV grant?

For UK domestic properties, the EV chargepoint grant provides funding of up to 75% towards the cost of installing electric vehicle chargepoints at domestic properties.

If you’re a flat owner or a tenant, you can claim for the chargepoint grant which provides £350 or up to 75% off the purchase and installation of a socket (whichever is the lower amount).

As a Landlord and property owner, you can apply for both the electric vehicle chargepoint grant and the electric vehicle infrastructure grant. 

 

The chargepoint grant

This Grant can provide £350 or up to 75% off the purchase and installation of a socket (whichever is the lower amount). With landlords being able to apply for up to 200 grants a year and commercial being able to apply for 100 per financial year.

The infrastructure grant

With the infastructure grant you can get up to £30,000 or 75% of the cost of installing multiple chargepoints and the related building work. The exact amount will depend on the number of parking spaces included in the work. With each grant having to be for a different property. The grant can include wiring and infrastructure to allow for future additional chargepoint installations. In each financial year, a maximum of 30 infrastructure grants may be submitted per business.

Is the OZEV grant ending?

The OZEV EV infrastructure and chargepoint grants have an official closing date of 31st March 2024 at 11.59pm. However, OZEV reserve the right to change the eligibility rules with 4 weeks’ notice. This won’t affect vouchers already issued. The next scheduled review of the OZEV Grant provision is set for March 2023. As the Government scales back its spending plans, the scheme could be at risk of cancellation. We recommend submitting your OZEV application and checking your eligibility now because a delay could mean your business misses out on this scheme.
